Greenspan's Body Count: census worker Bill Sparkman

Remember that dead census worker who MSNBC wingnut Rachel Maddow hyped as possible evidence of anti-government sentiment leading to violence?

Yeah, it turns out it was just another case of Greenspan's Body Count.

Police: Census worker made death look like homicide to get money:
Authorities cited a number of reasons supporting the conclusion that Sparkman killed himself.

For instance, there was no evidence that Sparkman had struggled with anyone. There were no defensive wounds on his body and no trauma such as a blow to the head, authorities said.

Tests ruled out any theory that he was drugged and unconscious when he was tied to the tree, making the lack of signs of a struggle more significant.

[...]

Authorities say they don't think there was any single event that triggered Sparkman to take his own life, but rather a combination of problems. He had significant debt and didn't have a full-time job, Rudzinski said.

Sparkman, a native of Florida, had moved to Laurel County to work with the Boy Scouts of America. In addition to working part-time for the census, he was a substitute teacher.

He had gotten a degree to teach math but had not been hired full-time.

In addition to the insurance considerations, Sparkman might have been trying to spare his family from thinking he killed himself, Rudzinski said, though he left no note so there is no way to know exactly what he was thinking.

Greenspan's Body Count stands at 118.

Greenspan's Body Count: Debra K. Gibbs and three players to be named later

MSNBC is catching on to the Greenspan's Body Count story. In an article about the general phenomenon, they include a few specific examples including Debra K. Gibbs of Goshen, Indiana:
Debra K. Gibbs, a 54-year-old homemaker in Goshen, in Elkhart County, didn’t leave a note. Instead, she simply sent her worried daughter out for soda pop on a summer morning — and then shot herself in the head.

Despondent over a pending home foreclosure and mounting bills, Gibbs took her life on June 23, the day after crews came to repossess her 2007 Chevy Malibu, the last purchase she’d made together with her late husband, Sam.

“She was doing everything she could to hold onto what was hers,” said Gibbs’ daughter, Rebecca Filley, 30, of Cassopolis, Mich. “This was a vivacious, very strong woman, and she was taken to her knees because of money.”

... and three unnamed victims:
They included an unemployed 52-year-old Sparta, Mich., man who hanged himself on New Year’s Day because he was “despondent over financial stress,” according to a case report. A 45-year-old Grand Rapids man shot himself in June after telling family members he was overwhelmed with credit card debt. And a 31-year-old Kentwood, Mich., man hanged himself in August in the wake of a home foreclosure and looming bills.

Greenspan's Body Count: Otis Beckford, victim of Orlando shooter Jason S. Rodriguez

It's been overshadowed by the Islamic terrorist attack on Fort Hood, but there was another shooting spree today, this one in Orlando.

And surprise, surprise -- it's another guy who was pushed over the edge by Greenspan's debt bubble:
The suspect in Friday's shooting of six people in a downtown high-rise is a 40-year-old "man with economic woes that include a recent bankruptcy filing, federal records show.

In his filing last May for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, under which he sought to have his assets liquidated and his debts discharged, Jason S. Rodriguez listed his assets at $4,675 and his liabilities at $89,873.31.

His 2002 Nissan XTerra with 110,000 miles represented $4,000 of those assets. His personal property filing described the vehicle as having body damage on the right side, an air conditioner that did not work and a transmission that was slipping.

He said his monthly income as a "sandwich artist" at a Subway Restaurant in Orlando, where he had worked for nine months, was $890.67, and he listed his monthly expenses at $815.

Excuse me? What kind of sick society extends enough credit for a "sandwich artist" to find himself in $90,000 of debt?

And, kiddies, didn't I tell you not to take on massive debt for a useless college education? Jason didn't get the memo:
The largest debts were for student loans -- $8,500 to Wachovia, $28,912 to Sallie Mae.

How did that education help your sandwich artistry, Jason? Spread the mayo with a little more flourish?

Thanks to Jr. Deputy Accountant for finding Alan Greenspan's DNA spewed all over the crime scene.

Greenspan's Body Count: Fore! Steven DeMocker chooses the 7-iron

In today's episode of Greenspan's Body Count, debtor Steven DeMocker stands accused of killing his ex-wife over money:
Accused killer Steven DeMocker and his ex-wife Carol Kennedy both struggled with finances after their divorce, which caused extreme friction between the two, a fraud examiner testified Friday at the Yavapai County Courthouse.

On the fourth day of the evidentiary hearing surrounding Kennedy's murder, Richard Echols said DeMocker and Kennedy argued extensively about money in a slew of e-mails during the months, weeks and days leading up to the victim's death on July 2, 2008.

Prosecuting attorneys accuse DeMocker, 55, of bludgeoning Kennedy to death with a golf club at what was their Williamson Valley home. The state is seeking the death penalty for DeMocker, a former financial advisor, based on five aggravating circumstances, including pecuniary gain.

On July 1, 2008, the day before Kennedy's death, e-mail correspondence between DeMocker and Kennedy indicates she complained about not receiving a second alimony payment of $6,000, money she was entitled to from her ex-husband and had planned to use to pay down debt.

She also could not afford to take over the mortgage on the couple's house, where she was living by herself after the split.

Essentially, prosecutors allege DeMocker killed Kennedy to avoid paying her $6,000 per month - $576,000 total - in alimony and to keep her from receiving a share of a 401K plan after the divorce.

Echols said Kennedy had a job but could not pay all of her bills. She was relying on DeMocker for help. However, Echols testified that DeMocker penned in a March 13, 2008, e-mail that he was unable to pay off his debts on five credit cards and he had borrowed $50,000 from his father.

Echols added that DeMocker's income shrunk by 30 percent in the first six months of 2008 when compared with the same timeframe the previous year. He estimated DeMocker owed creditors $160,000 in 2007.

To cover his shortfall, Echols said DeMocker tried to get money from the company he worked for, Phoenix-based UBS Financial Services Inc., and made a premature withdrawal of $89,000 from an IRA. Prosecutors say Kennedy also had two separate life insurance policies, including one for $250,000 that would go directly to DeMocker if Kennedy died.

The next time you're tempted to run up the credit cards to buy crap that you can't afford, think about where that got Steve and Carol.

Greenspan's Body Count: Diane Ward, wife of developer James Robert Ward

Never judge a book by its cover. James Robert Ward and Diane Ward appeared to be happy and fabulously wealthy. Which they were, until Greenspan's bubble popped:
Ward built a life for himself, his wife and their two daughters on the strength of a business that developed exclusive vacation-home communities across the country.

In 2007, he and his wife moved from Atlanta to Orlando's tony Isleworth country-club community; and it was in that mansion Monday night that, police say, Bob Ward shot and killed Diane Ward.

The aftermath shows a family that was in severe financial distress.

[...]

The company went bankrupt in 2008 and had its assets sold for $15.6 million in January, court records show.

The seven-bedroom, nine-bathroom house — once owned by legendary golfer Arnold Palmer, former major-league pitcher Orel Hershiser and publishing mogul Rance Crain — is in foreclosure.

The Wards hadn't made a monthly mortgage payment of $16,841 for more than a year, and as of July, they owed $3.6 million on the home they bought for $4.3million, according to court records.

Listed for $5.2 million, the house has been for sale for nearly two years, according to its listing on realtor.com.

"I think Bob was hit with every kind of stress you can imagine," Saare said. "I don't have a clue as to what happened."

Whether this was murder as the police allege or suicide as James Ward's attorney claims, it's clear that the finger that pulled the trigger was on the invisible hand of Alan Greenspan.

Greenspan's Body Count: Edith Moreno and Diana Moreno

The anguish that Greenspan hath wrought is so horrible that even mothers murder their daughters:
The family of a woman arrested on suspicion fatally slashing her two daughters' throats says she had recently lost her job and was briefly hospitalized for stress.

Antonia Gomez was arrested in Sun Valley Friday and is recovering from knife wounds to her wrists and upper body.

Relatives tell the Los Angeles Times the 38-year-old Gomez was unable to make mortgage payments and had recently moved in with her mother. They say Gomez was afraid she might have to move back to Mexico.

Officers responding to a 911 call on Wednesday found 12-year-old Edith Moreno and her 17-year-old sister Diana Moreno dead with multiple stab wounds.

Greenspan's Body Count: Tom Blackmore goes realtor on his parents in Rancho Santa Fe

It starts with what sounds like a simple case of a guy gone crazy:
A 40-year-old real estate agent who was fatally shot by his father on Labor Day had just been released from psychiatric hospitalization when he went to his parents' Rancho Santa Fe mansion in a violent rage, attacking his mother and charging his father, authorities said.

[...]

While the reasons Thomas Blackmore might have turned violent Monday are unclear, he had struggled for years with alcoholism and depression and had spent the weekend under an involuntary 72-hour psychiatric evaluation after threatening suicide in text messages to family members Friday, Brugos said. Deputies found Blackmore near the railroad tracks in Encinitas, but he fought with deputies before being taken into custody and committed to the hospital, he said.

And the younger Blackmore faced felony charges stemming from an alleged alcohol-fueled April attack on two strangers in a gated community in the Fairbanks Ranch area, prosecutors said. He was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.

Tom Blackmore grew up in a well-off family, and tried to provide a similar lifestyle for his own young family. As an adult, Blackmore was a married father of two who worked in commercial real estate at Lee & Associates in Carlsbad (and apparently at NAI San Diego before that).

Blackmore had some huge early career successes in the bubble years including a $24 million Carlsbad lease for Invitrogen, and it goes without saying that he would have had a difficult time maintaining that success in the post-Greenspan-bubble era (I have told you about the CRE market, haven't I?). So it's not a great leap to suggest that financial pressures led to his breakdown. And then he planned an attack on his parents that looks suspiciously like he was trying to kill them and inherit their wealth:
On Monday, at about 6:30 p.m., Blackmore parked a quarter-mile from his parents' home on Via Recanto, an exclusive private road not far from the Rancho Santa Fe Golf Course, and walked to the house, carrying a 2-gallon can of gasoline, Brugos said.

If Greenspan's bubble didn't cause Blackmore's mental breakdown, I'll eat my hat. And I would bet his rage at his parents centered around their refusal or inability to loan or give him money.

Greenspan's Body Count stands at 107. That's what you get when you give unbridled control of a nation's money supply to a bunch of politicians and academics. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Blackmore family.
